Pink Ribbon Bus visited Birstonas – the town of the origin of health
2011-04-13 15:59

On the 9th April 2011 the „Do not Delay!“ bus, which brings pink hope through the whole Lithuania visited Birstonas – the town of the origin of health. On 7-10 April there were a lot of events dedicated to celebrate the International Health Day. Town citizens and its guests could participate in various contests and exercises to strengthen their health. In the Health Care Centre free medical examinations were carried out.

From 9 am to 6 pm women were coming to Primary Health Care Centre to be checked for breast cancer, learn self-examination and to know more about breast cancer prophylactics. Every woman who came was rewarded with a symbolic rose origami crane which symbolizes hope, health and longevity and an „Angel‘s Calendar for 2011“

In total during the day 84 women aged 21 – 77 were examined. International Health Organization recommends start checking breasts from age 20. Fortunately, celebrating the International Health Day in Birstonas no breast cancer cases were discovered. There were diagnosed 7 laudable cases of breast diseases (cysts, fibrodenomas), which development must be watched. These women were provided with professional consultation. What makes us happy is that the majority of women who came to have checkups told us that it was not their first examination and only ten women admitted that it was their first acquaintance with the mamologist.

Whole Birstonas is surrounded by a Do Not Delay! Pink ribbon: in the beginning of the project in 2003 almost one thousand women from Birstonas, Nemajunai, Siponys and Matiesonys wards had free medical examinations.

The „Pink Ribbon“ team travelling around Lithuania‘s towns and villages, carries out medical examinations for breast cancer, during the visits, doctors tell about the symptoms of the disease, teaches self-examination, organize lectures about the disease and the harmonious lifestyle. Since the beginning of the project 64 thousand women have been examined and 600 breast cancer cases were diagnosed, four of them – in Birstonas.
